History has shown that a political movement is merely an idea until it finds a badge, a recognizable symbol of solidarity in strife. Women's Lib had burning braziers; Environmentalists have the color green; the French Revolution is known for its guillotine; and Socialism waves a red flag. The Writers Guild Strike, now in its third month, has its own emblème, too—the strike beard.

But unlike with most political movements, the act of relinquishing a strike beard has also taken on a kind of symbolism. Just ask Diane Wood, the 26-year-old daughter of Adrian Wood, who owns Paul Molé, an old-school Upper East Side barbershop that's been shaving faces since 1913. After all, Ms. Wood shaved David Letterman's beard yesterday, less than a week after the late-night talk show host returned to the air, having recently reached an agreement with the W.G.A.

Green's proposed changes for ORU include power-sharing

In return for a $62 million donation, Oral Roberts University's board of regents will be asked to share power, the Tulsa World has learned.

Mart Green, a Yukon businessman whose family founded the Hobby Lobby chain of craft stores, released a statement to the World on Tuesday outlining his process for reform at the university.

Green is in Bethlehem in the West Bank, where his nonprofit film company is making a movie.

Green said his family plans to present a detailed proposal to ORU's regents in early 2008.

Green's family gave ORU an unconditional donation of $8 million last month and promised an additional $62 million if ORU accepts the proposal.

Green's statement says: "The proposal will focus on accepted twenty-first century shared governance principles.

Why can’t the English be more like the French?

It is well known that Englishmen are no good at sex. They go at it in a medieval fashion, blind drunk, ignorant and with no respect for la séduction.

To attract male attention, Englishwomen have to go out "on the pull" dressed like tarts. When the English do "score" (sporting vocabulary is de rigueur for sex), the rules are clear. In no way must the sex ever be discussed, although it might be conceded that last night was "a laugh". Altogether, it is a mystery how they ever procreate.

Instead of a sex life, the British have their newspapers. What they really love is scandal: catching people out, punishing them for daring to have sex. This is completely in keeping with the puritan tradition.

Picture the English couple in bed on Sunday morning.

Disaboom gathers disabled for frank online discussion

There's a new online gathering place where revealing that you use a wheelchair or can't hear is no big deal, because the person you're chatting with probably lives a similar experience.

Disaboom.com -- so named because the creator wanted to "blow the doors off" stereotypes -- is a website for the disabled community that combines lifestyle and medical information, discussion boards, social networking, a career centre and a dating site. It lays claim to being the first for-profit online destination for people with disabilities, which translates to a slick, sophisticated space with plenty of resources.
