Man pulled from blaze by neighbours
An Rural Fireservice Service spokesman said the 57-year-old man was dragged from the two-storey home with severe burns to his face, neck and arms. Four children were among nine people taken to hospital after the fire at Lemon Tree Passage about 6am. The man has been taken to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital by emergency helicopter. The fire completely destroyed the brick and tile home after starting on the upper level. "A female in her 50s had lower leg injuries after she jumped out of the house from the second storey," a Westpac Helicopter spokesman said. "Four adults and four children are stable with smoke inhalation and superficial burns," NSW Ambulance Service spokeswoman Clare Pemberton said. Two of the children are girls aged six and 12, while the other adults in a stable condition are men aged 26, 28 and 37 and a woman aged 56.

Rather than eating in my high-tech hole-in-the-wall, though, I headed out blinking into the terminal and trawled the sandwich sellers, coffee shops and Krispy-Kreme doughnut joints, hoping I would still fit through the door of my mini-room once I returned.

MySpace agrees to new safety measures
An official familiar with the multistate agreement said that MySpace, the huge online social networking Web site, has agreed to include several online protections and participate in a working group to develop age-verification and other technologies. The official said MySpace will also accept independent monitoring and changes to the structure of its site. The agreement is scheduled to be announced today in Manhattan by attorneys general from New Jersey, North Carolina, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement hadn’t yet been announced. The attorneys general have been seeking greater controls for online networking sites to prevent sexual predators from using those sites to contact children.
