| 'You scope 'em out'
Women also are going online to find moms who match their personality and interests, much like singles use an online dating service. "You scope 'em out," says Magalie Belanger, 31, about prospective mommy-friends in Helena. "You see how they deal with their children, and with yours." It's like dating, but the dates are with other moms and their children. While the kids play, hopefully without tantrums or biting, the moms are free to talk about the things they have in common, from the lofty subjects of religion and politics to the more practical topics of teething and diaper rash. "Women, they want someone else who is going through the same thing," says Drury Sherrod, a Los Angeles social psychologist who studies friendship. Often, that can mean seeking out other women in the same trimester of pregnancy or whose children are similar in age, he says.

Avril beats out JT at EMAs; Spears sued by former manager; Lohan doesn ...
Amy Winehouse stumbled through her performance at the MTV Europe Music Awards on Thursday (November 1) shortly after giving a very brief acceptance speech when she won the Artists' Choice honor. The singer — who was announced as a last-minute addition to the show when she canceled her planned performance at the mtvU Woodie Awards on November 8 — gave a brief "thanks" when she accepted the award, and later appeared to have difficulty remembering the words to her own song and danced unsteadily as she performed. And while this year's MTV Video Music Awards belonged to Justin Timberlake (and Rihanna), JT wasn't able to replicate his success abroad at the EMAs. While he was the most nominated artist, he left with no awards — and maybe even more stunningly, he was outdone by Avril Lavigne, who nabbed Most Addictive Track ("Girlfriend") and Solo Artist of 2007.
Brisbane widow tricked by online beaus
A BRISBANE widow is on the verge of bankruptcy after being seduced out of $60,000 in successive online romance scams. The 65-year-old first-time internet user was also new to dating when she went looking for love online last year. After joining a meeting website for seniors, the woman was approached by a man claiming to be an English professor of physics who was building a robotic tractor. The woman, who wants to be identified only as Shirley, quickly fell in love with "James" who over several months sent photos of himself, his children and his passport. "I wanted to meet like-minded people," she said. "We were supposed to be married this Christmas. He asked if I could assist him with his project and I didn't hesitate because we were a couple. I borrowed $20,000 on a personal loan and sent him the lot." Shirley, who had been on her own since she was widowed 10 years ago, also sent him $10,000 for airfares.
