Iraq Passes Bill on Baathists Plan Would Ease Limits on Former Hussein ...

Some Iraqi officials believe the new measure institutionalizes a punishment against people who acquiesced to Hussein at a time when publicly opposing him could have resulted in a death sentence.

"The problem is that the new leaders have gone in the direction of revenge and vengeance, rather than going into healing those wounds," said Izzat Shabender, a Shiite who is on the de-Baathification committee in parliament. "Even if this law is passed, it cannot achieve the goal -- which is opening a new chapter with the Baathists. . . . It's got nothing to do with reconciliation. The culture of reconciliation does not exist in the heads of the Iraqi leaders."

But with parliament nearly paralyzed by infighting, any agreement was something many Iraqis found heartening. As the prominent Shiite politician Humam Hamoudi said, "The most important thing about this new law is that it is an Iraqi law."

Abramowitz reported from Camp Arifjan.

St. Leo priest faces abuse allegation

He is not facing criminal charges, but the allegation has been reported to civil authorities in New York, said Sticco, the provincial leader of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate, a South Orange, N.J.-based religious order also known as the Pallottines, which staffs St. Leo's.

Salerno, 61, joined the Pallottines as a brother - a lay member who has taken vows, not a priest - in 1968. He served at two Brooklyn, N.Y., parishes and one on Long Island as a brother. He also worked at a Catholic high school in New Jersey and a Brooklyn homeless shelter before he was ordained in 1993. Salerno was appointed pastor of St. Leo's four years later.

Sticco and archdiocese officials did not name the accuser. The man contacted his home diocese last week to report the abuse, which he said took place at All Saints Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn when he was a young teen, Sticco said.

Report: Adnan Ghalib Still Very Much Married

The photo agency that employs Adnan Ghalib claims he is “happily dating" Britney Spears.

But MSNBC is reporting that those who say the paparazzo has been separated from his wife for more than a year are as misguided as Spears herself.

“He was with [his wife] up until a week before he and Britney started this thing," said an insider. “And she thinks that they'll work things out in the end."

Moreover, Ghalib and his wife actually communicate frequently, which only makes the situation stranger. Unless you believe that - shocker! - the couple is just looking for money out of the deal.

“It makes you think that she [Ghalib's wife] must think they'll get something out of it in the end," added the source, confirming the impression that everyone in the world not named Britney Spears is under.

Bowden, Tuberville show consistency pays off

It was the press conference that just wouldn't end.

Sunday morning, Tommy Bowden and Tommy Tuberville met with reporters in a Sheraton Hotel ballroom for one last preview of tonight's Clemson-Auburn Chick-fil-A Bowl.

It was one of the most pointless media gatherings I've ever attended (yes, you just read “pointless" and “media" in the same sentence), serving largely as a opportunity for TV reporters to get sound bites and for columnists and reporters who haven't been here all week to get their questions answered.

For those of us who have been here since Wednesday, it was a bore — if you had a question to ask of Bowden or Tuberville that you hadn't asked by now, you're either not doing your job or hadn't written your game advance yet.

Somehow, though, Tuberville made it worthwhile.

At least six people in Albany and Dougherty County have died over the ...

ALBANY — As hundreds of butterflies were released into the warm October sky Wednesday, advocates for victims of domestic violence say that violence from family members in the Albany area is on the rise.

In a ceremony kicking off Domestic Violence Awareness month, Liberty House Executive Director Silke Deeley said that the butterflies symbolized the transformation that the victims of domestic violence are often forced to undertake.

The Liberty House serves as domestic violence prevention tool for 17 south Georgia counties.

With at least six domestic violence murders over the last two years, Deeley said that domestic violence is a deeply rooted crime that is often perpetuated because of the fear of reporting it police.

“It’s really south Georgia’s dirty little secret,” Deeley said.
