| With his 3rd golf victory in 6 months, Choi moving into elite company
He has been playing the U.S. PGA Tour since 2000, and rarely hears his name mentioned in the same sentence with the top two players in the world. But the more he keeps winning, it might be hard to leave him out of the conversation. Choi has established himself as the best Asian player in the world, the only one in the top 25. But he is moving into more elite company now, especially after a start-to-finish victory in the Sony Open, his third U.S. PGA Tour victory in his last 12 starts. The 37-year-old from South Korea is at No. 7 in the world, a career-high for him. His three-shot victory at Waialae, in which he built a four-shot lead going into the final round and survived blustery conditions to hold off a late charge from Rory Sabbatini, was the seventh in his career.
Radio host should know newspaper columns are meant to last
Spittle, a learning-deprived-and-proud-of-it morning sports-talk radio host in Chicago, is knuckle-dragging his way toward that allegedly unreachable bottom. He and his ace staff of ''researchers'' recently ''discovered'' that I wrote a column a year ago announcing that I voted for flagrant and admitted drug abusers Jose Canseco and Ken Caminiti (dead of a drug overdose), as well as Tony Gwynn, Goose Gossage, Cal Ripken Jr. and Andre Dawson, on my 2007 Hall of Fame ballot. My ballot was photocopied next to my column for viewing, for those who can't read, I suppose. The reason I voted for Canseco and Caminiti, as I described in my column of Dec. 22, 2006, was as a protest against baseball's lax handling of the performance-enhancing drug mess that has been building for years and years.
The Longford effect
Although Longford was originally shown on Channel 4 in October 2006, it was not until last year that it really began to reap the rewards for its sensitive handling of a rather dark and unusual tale. In January 2007, it was the Official Selection for Best Dramatic Picture at the Sundance Film Festival. Then it was nominated for an incredible nine Bafta TV Awards at the glitzy bash last May, including a best actress nod for Samantha, best actor for Andy Serkis and best director for Tom Hooper. In the end it won three, with Jim taking best actor over Andy, best writer for Peter Morgan and best editing. At the Emmy Awards - the US version of the Baftas - in September, Longford was nominated for five awards including outstanding lead actor in a mini-series or movie for Jim and outstanding supporting actress for Sam, but it didn't win any.
